Fall Hiking

Fall hiking offers some of the best, up close and personal views of the North Shore’s breathtaking fall colors. Waves of red, orange and yellow extend as far as the eye can see from the rocky ridges overlooking Lake Superior.


Come explore the shore by bicycle. Road and mountain bike rentals are included as part of your stay at Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts and the North Shore offers trails for both that meet all skill and ambition levels.

Fall Kayaking

Our Fall Kayak Tour that combines a scenic drive through the maples of the Superior National Forest with a leisurely paddle on an inland lake where you’re sure to see some wildlife, as well as the breathtaking fall color.

Summer Hiking

The Lutsen-Tofte area is home to some of the most beautiful and dramatic sections of the Superior Hiking Trail. This 205-mile footpath follows the rocky ridgeline above Lake Superior from Two Harbors to the Canadian border.


Lake Superior offers one of the most incredible sea kayaking experiences available between the two coasts. Bluefin Bay offers guided sea kayaking excursions three to four times per day throughout the summer.


Unique geologic formations along the North Shore of Lake Superior allow visitors the opportunity to witness breathtaking waterfalls. In the spring when the snow melts, these waterfalls swell and create spectacular sights.

Wilderness Canoeing Experience

Our Wilderness Canoeing Experience has become a guest favorite. No past canoe experience is needed and children as young as five can participate. The trip is leisurely, scenic, and within the whole family’s capabilities.

Maple Syruping

In early spring, as the days become warmer and the nights still dip below freezing, area maple trees spring to life. The Lusten-Tofte area is home to thousands of sap producing maple trees, and two award-winning maple syrup producing companies.


The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA), named one of National Geographic’s “50 Destinations of a Lifetime”, truly deserves its reputation as one of the top wilderness destinations in the country.


Located just seven miles from Superior National Golf Course, Bluefin Bay is the perfect place to stay on your golf getaway. Superior National, offering 27 unique holes, was ranked as the #1 public golf course in Minnesota by Golf Digest Magazine.


Our onsite tennis court is available for play as long as light permits. We also offer complementary tennis rackets and balls available for guest use.

Naturalist Programs

Join a naturalist from the United States Forest Service and learn about North Shore history, its animal inhabitants, and its native flora and fauna. Programs are offered daily around the area and are free to the public.

Wolf Ridge Programs

We are thrilled to partner with the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center to bring our guests unparalleled opportunities to experience the wilder side of the North Shore. Located in nearby Finland, MN, Wolf Ridge is a nationally recognized leader in environmental education.

Downhill Skiing & Snowboarding

The Lutsen-Tofte area is home to Lutsen Mountains, the biggest and best ski resort in the Midwest, bar none. Located just eight miles from Bluefin Bay, Lusten Mountains offers the highest mountains, the most snowfall, and of course the breathtaking beautiful North Shore.

Cross Country Skiing

Spectacular scenery, varied terrain, and abundant snow add up to some of the best cross-country skiing in the country. Trails in the immediate Lutsen-Tofte area total more than 150km and are groomed with the best available equipment.


The Bluefin Bay area offers spectacular snowshoeing trails, including nearly all of the Superior Hiking Trail open for winter use.  Snowshoeing is a great opportunity to get out into the tranquil north woods during the winter.

Ice Skating

Our outdoor ice rink, lit at night, provides guests with the opportunity to skate without even leaving the resort. Hockey and figure skates are available to our guests in all sizes as a complimentary service.


Gas up your sled. The Lutsen-Tofte Snowmobile Trail System offers 67 miles of groomed trails for that connect with the 146 mile-long North Shore State Snowmobile Trail, allowing for an endless combination of routes that can accommodate everything from a one hour to a full day ride.

Dog Sledding

If you haven’t been, dog sledding through the backcountry with some of the best dog mushers in North America is an experience you shouldn’t miss. Dog sledding is one of the most fun and unique winter activities the North Shore has to offer.

Campfire & S’mores

Join us on the Bluefin Bay beach, just feet from Lake Superior, for an evening campfire with s’mores. Cozy up next to the campfire and gaze out onto the seemingly endless beauty of the lake.


Yoga sessions at Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts take place on weekends throughout the year in the Bluefin Bay Tofte Room and are complimentary with your stay.
