It’s a time of year we look forward to at Bluefin Bay. And if you’re wondering what the Gales of November actually are, here’s a little background on the big show.
The Gales of November are powerful fall windstorms that sweep across the Great Lakes. As colder air moves south from Canada and meets warmer air moving north, strong storm systems can develop. The lakes, still holding warmth from summer, can add energy to these systems. Strong winds blowing across miles of open water help build the dramatic waves we see along the shoreline.
The result? A Lake Superior that can look and sound a lot more like an ocean.
Despite the name, Gales Season isn’t limited to one month. Late October through December can bring impressive waves to the North Shore. November simply gets top billing!
Of course, Lake Superior follows its own schedule. A late-fall stay might bring a stormy afternoon, a peaceful morning, or a little of both. That’s part of the fun: pouring your coffee, looking out the window, and seeing what the lake is up to today.
Our favorite way to watch the waves involves a warm drink, a comfortable seat, and plenty of time to enjoy the view. There’s something mesmerizing about watching one wave build behind another before breaking along the shore.
At Bluefin Bay, you can make the lake the main event without packing your day full of plans. Settle in with a book, linger over breakfast, or spend an afternoon catching up with someone you love while the water puts on a show outside.
If you head outdoors, give the lake plenty of space. Watch from a safe distance, stay off wave-washed rocks, and follow local weather alerts.
By late fall, the colorful leaves have given way to open lake views, crisp air, and a slower pace. It’s a lovely time to browse local shops, enjoy a cozy dinner, or simply spend a little longer by the fire. Best of all, you don’t have to set an early alarm to catch the sunrise this time of year!
