Deciding which of the many activities your family should participate in while vacationing at the Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts can be a daunting task. We offer a variety of complimentary activities for resort guests, ranging from guided kayaking on Lake Superior, to guided hikes, to yoga, to an agate class on the Bluefin Bay Beach, and more! But few are as popular as wilderness canoeing.
The Bluefin Bay Wilderness Canoeing Experience on the Poplar River is both a guest and resort favorite. It’s the perfect activity for all members of your family — from young children to Grandma and Grandpa. It’s guided by our expert resort guides and complimentary when you stay at any of the Bluefin Bay Resorts — Bluefin Bay, Surfside or Temperance Landing on Lake Superior.
Our Wilderness Canoe Experience is a guided excursion along the scenic Poplar River located in Lutsen, right near Lutsen Mountains — less than 10 minutes from the resort. Guests meet at Bluefin Bay Guest Services and ride together in our resort shuttle van to the Poplar River, then hike about a quarter of a mile to the canoes, and paddle about two miles along the beautiful Poplar River. No past canoe experience is needed and children as young as five years old can partake. The trip is leisurely, scenic, and within the whole family’s capabilities.
At Bluefin Bay, we love this excursion because, just like in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), no two trips are alike. We always see and experience something different. For families who love to stay at Bluefin Bay but have always wondered what a Boundary Waters experience would be like, this 2.5 hour trip gives you a flavor for it, closer to home. Plus, we provide all of the equipment.
TIP: Make sure you sign up ahead of time in Guest Services to grab spots for your family members. Our summer Wilderness Canoe Experience is popular on the Poplar River and it fills quickly. We can’t wait to see you out there!
