The Lutsen-Tofte and Grand Marais areas have become known as a haven for bikers and biking events. The Le Grand Du Nord Gravel Cycling Classic is coming up this weekend, May 26th. Starting out at the Grand Marais harbor this gravel course climbs almost 6000 ft! Live music, Voyageur Brewing Company beer and the vibe of Grand Marais make this a fun event for bikers and spectators.

On June 23, the Lutsen 99er returns. Several thousand bikers from around the country gather to race through the pristine north woods of Cook County. The race is most known for its 99-miles of mountainous course, but it has now expanded to include a new 69-mile course, along with its 39, 19-mile courses and Sunday kids races.

In addition to the wonderful local paved trail that runs right to the Bluefin Bay properties, this area has incredible mountain biking opportunities with even more in the planning stages. For single-track enthusiasts check out the Sugarbush Trail Association Trails located just a couple miles from the resort and the Pincushion Mountain Biking Trails in Grand Marais.

Happy pedalling!

Fall Color Report: Play at Pincushion!

Fall Color Report: We are reporting…Peak Color!

A trip to Grand Marais is on most people’s lists when they stay with us and this awesome nearby city has been named the best midwestern small town. In addition to the great art galleries, shopping, dining, brew pubs, access to the Gunflint Trail and views of the harbor, there are also lots of outdoor adventure opportunities here.

For this week’s Fall Color Report, we went hiking at Pincushion Mountain. From Grand Marais the overlook parking area is a quick 1.5 mile drive up the Gunflint Trail. At the parking area you are greeted with a stunning overlook of the Grand Marais harbor. Even if you don’t have time for a hike, a drive to this overlook is a must do activity while in Grand Marais!

The trek to Pincushion Mountain overlook is an enjoyable 4-mile round trip hike with rolling hills and mixed forests. This trail follows the Superior Hiking Trail to a panoramic vista on a large outcropping of rock providing spectacular views of Lake Superior, the Sawtooth Mountains, and the inland hills. The aspen and birch were stunning with their bright yellows, golds and orange colors. The contrast against the dark green evergreens is stunning this year. We are reporting peak color along Lake Superior’s North Shore!

Visit the Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts Fall Photo Gallery for more images from our Pincushion adventure.

In addition to hiking you can also access 10+ miles of single-track mountain bike trails from this trailhead. Find maps, trail conditions and stay up to date with future trail developments via the Superior Cycling Association website.

Winter weather enthusiasts will also find great cross-country ski trails at Pincushion Mountain. The North Superior Ski & Run Club is a non-profit volunteer organization that developed these wonderful trails in conjunction with the USFS and maintains them for all to use.

Hike, bike, or ski…there are so many ways to enjoy the fabulous Pincushion Mountain trails!
