Hygge (pronounced “HOO-gah”) is a Danish word for enjoying life’s simple pleasures. At Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts, this concept is woven into everything we do. Here are some ways to get into the Hygge spirit on your next trip:

  • Visit our Activity Calendar and join us on a complimentary guided adventure
  • Curl up with a good book or jovial conversation with loved ones around a warm fire
  • Guests can check out complimentary cross-country skis, snowshoes, ice trekkers, and ice skates
  • Enjoy a hot sauna or a soak in the hot tub
  • Soak by yourself in a whirlpool tub
  • Enjoy a cozy meal from the Coho Café & Bakery or the Bluefin Grille (delivery is available for resort guests)

Hygge Events

The Hygge Festival takes place throughout the county and runs from February 5-14th. The event features live music (including Campfire Music at Bluefin Bay!), art events and more.

The Sugarbush Trail Association will be hosting a Candlelit Ski and Snowshoe event on February 19th from 6 – 8 p.m. This charming night time activity really showcases the romance of a snow covered forest.

Wedding & Events Update

It goes without saying that it’s been a tricky 12 months for wedding and event planners. Because of all of the confusion of this past year, we wanted to post an update on what the Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts is currently planning in regards to events. In everything we do, the health and safety of our resort guests, staff and the community remains our top priority.


Tofte Cove Wedding Set Up

We’ll start by saying that our hearts go out to all of the couples that are navigating this pandemic while trying to plan their very special day. We have been doing our best to offer clear and consistent communication to our already booked wedding couples, but we know that it hasn’t been easy for you. Bluefin Bay Wedding

Moving forward, we’ll be hosting events for 40 people or less. Our ceremony locations include Tofte Cove or the Beach Patio near Bluefin Grille. There are two choices for your reception dinner: the Shore Room at Bluefin Grille (up to 16 people) or the Superior Room upstairs at Bluefin Grille (up to 40 people). Lastly, as a result of higher than usual occupancy across the Bluefin Bay Resorts, we recommend that you contact our Guest Services department to check for lodging availability before inquiring about event and wedding services.

Salt and HEPA – A Dining Update from Bluefin Grille + Coho Café

We recognize that dining options are an important part of your decision to stay with us. There have been a few small changes at the Bluefin Grille and Coho Café & 

Bakery that we wanted to share with you this week. Please know that this information is current as of October 28th, 2020 but is subject to change. You can check out the dining page on our website for the most current information.

Safety Protocols

We look forward to having you dine with us this winter! We’ve purchased HEPA air purifiers for both the Bluefin Grille and Coho Café and are also installing ionization technology in the existing ventilation systems, both of which will improve air quality and safety. Tables inside both restaurants have been appropriately spaced according to capacity and social distancing guidelines. If you are planning to dine at Bluefin Grille, please make a reservation in advance. This can be done by calling us at 218-663-6200 or via Open Table. You can also order online for takeout.


Thanksgiving at Bluefin Grille

The holidays will be a bit different this year! We just published our Thanksgiving Day menu. Reservations for Thanksgiving dinner will be available from 12-6pm and can be made online via Open Table or by calling us at 218-663-6200. Be sure to make your reservations early as we do expect it to fill up.

Resort dining changes effective June 1

Grille & Coho hours change, add outside dining

As many of you know, the State of Minnesota opened up outside dining for restaurants as of June 1. There is still no in-house dining in restaurants and no indication of when it will be allowed.

Here’s an update on our Bluefin Bay Family of Resort dining hours, options, and safety protocols as of June 1, 2020:

Coho Cafe BakeryCoho Cafe & Bakery:

The Coho Cafe & Bakery is now open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily for counter service of to-go or takeout orders and outside dining. Our front outside patio and side/back deck seating is available only after you order at the counter. Social distancing and safety protocols apply to counter service and outdoor seating areas. Signage directs guests how to order and dine under our new outside dining protocols.

Coho Cafe is temporarily closed to in-house dining by order of the State of Minnesota and will re-open when allowed. In the meantime, we’re working on additional outdoor seating and policies to make the in-dining experience safe when the Cafe reopens.

Bluefin Grille

The Bluefin Grille is now open from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily for curbside takeout, room delivery, and very limited outside deck seating (weather and space permitting). The Grille’s lakeside deck seats very few guests with new social distancing requirements, so we encourage takeout and room delivery until we build a new outdoor seating area.

Guests are also welcome to dine with takeout at any open picnic table or outside dining space around the resort properties — remember the social distancing rule of at least six feet — or one moose — apart!

We are building a NEW outdoor dining space in front of the Bluefin Grille with an expected completion date of mid to late June. This will provide additional outdoor seating to accommodate more guests, since in-restaurant dining space will be limited even when it resumes. We’ll share progress on the new outside dining space and keep you posted here on the I Love Bluefin Blog and on Facebook and Instagram.

Waves Cafe at Surfside: At this time, we do not plan to open Waves Cafe at Surfside this season due to Covid-restrictions and limited staffing. We’ll let you know if that changes.

Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we implement these new safety protocols and dining options. These are challenging times and our aim is to provide quality dining options and menu choices under very strict safety protocols and staffing challenges.

Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts offers three unique dining experiences to please your palate and your senses. And, yes, all have lake views! This summer, our chefs and the Food & Beverage team have been busy adding some new summer menu items to all dining locations. In addition, all three restaurant venues have received upgrades including a major renovation at the Bluefin Grille.

There are many new additions to the  Bluefin Grille menu this summer. Bluefin Prime New York Strip, Kobe Guajillo Burger, Pan Seared Scallops, and a Stuffed Chicken Roulade just to name a few. Coho Cafe & Bakery

Kick back and relax with an espresso or your favorite glass of wine in our casual, yet chic North Shore bistro. Sample the award-winning pizza, fresh homemade bread, or one of our specialty soups or salads. Top it all off with something sweet and sumptuous. Open seven-days-a-week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Coho Cafe fare is available to eat in or take out. Walleye Tacos, Crepes, and a Chicken & Pineapple Quesadilla are a few of our favorite new menu items.

Waves of Superior Cafe

Located at Surfside on Lake Superior, Waves of Superior Café offers breathtaking views of Lake Superior in a sunny, serene setting that complements our signature Waves of Superior Spa. Enjoy light, healthy fare from our Chef-driven menus featuring the freshest offerings of the Minnesota seasons. Open seasonally serving breakfast, and lunch, Waves of Superior Café is a nice stop after your spa treatment, workout or hike. The new Almond Blueberry Pancakes, Tex Mex Burrito, and Chicken Enchilada Wrap are quickly becoming guest favorites. Waves of Superior Cafe also recently received beautiful updates to the indoor dining space.



North Shore Culinary School Scholarship Announcement

north shore culinary school logoBluefin Bay is happy to announce a scholarship for a student to come to learn, live, and play on the North Shore of Lake Superior!

In partnership with Hibbing Community College, credentialed culinary instructors will lead students through culinary certificate or diploma classes. Starting in the fall of 2019, students can choose either a 17-week Culinary Arts Certificate (16 credits) or a 34-week program to earn a One-Year Culinary Arts Diploma (31 credits). The recently completed culinary arts school is located in beautiful Grand Marais at the ISD 166 building.

Outside of the classroom, scholarship recipients will be provided a job at the Bluefin Grille to earn while you learn, putting skills from the classroom into real-world experience.  Housing and additional tuition assistance may also be available.

Dining News!

beef skewers at bluefin grilleHere at Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts, we are embracing Spring and the ‘Season of Change’. The entire Bluefin Grille restaurant will be receiving a beautiful renovation between April 14th and the 24th. Including, a fresh new color palette, new lighting, and the addition of some fun features.  We invite you to come for a visit and check it out when we reopen on Thursday, April 25th!

During the renovations, the Bluefin Grille will be closed but Coho Cafe & Bakery will be open daily 8am-9pm for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In addition, Coho Cafe is also the perfect place to grab a morning coffee or afternoon sweet treat. Ice cream, anyone? Dine in with the full menu while enjoying a glass of wine or beer, grab a meal or snack to go, or order one of the gourmet take-and-bake pizzas.

Waves of Superior Cafe at Surfside will be opening for the season Thursday, May 23rd! Enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Superior in a sunny, serene setting that complements our signature Waves of Superior Spa.

Our Food and Beverage team is also busy crafting and designing a few new menu items for the summer season at all restaurants. Stay tuned on social media for featured menu highlights as we roll out the new offerings.

November 2nd & 3rd will include special events focusing on food and wine – and of course, it is all set against the backdrop of Lake Superior! Bluefin Bay has been hosting Food & Wine Lovers Events for more than 20 years and we’re delighted to partner with Mpls-St. Paul Magazine as our media partner for this long-standing event.

We’re excited to welcome our guest chef for this year’s Friday & Saturday night dinners: Executive Chef Keven Kvalsten from the FireLake Grill House & Cocktail Bar in Minneapolis. Read his full bio here.

Each course will be paired with wine by our friends at Johnson Brothers Wine Company making the evenings a real treat for those who love great food and wine.
