MEA Weekend – Halloween Fun with Bluefin Bay

October 17, 2016

firescienceSchool children all across the state of Minnesota are tapping their toes and wiggling in their seats a little bit more than usual this Monday, eagerly
anticipating the last long weekend before the winter snows. Colloquially called “MEA Weekend” in honor of the annual Education Minnesota’s conference being hosted in St. Paul, this blissful four-day weekend begins on Thursday of this week and it is celebrated all over the state with a host of family-friendly festivals and activities.

If you are spending your MEA weekend on the North Shore, you will have plenty of wonderful options which are sure to entertain youngsters and parents alike. As just one example, Grand Marais will be hosting a moose-tacular bunch of themed activities during their
festival, beginning on Friday! What could be more Minnesotan than that? Check out last week’s blog for more details and a full schedule of events.

Here at the Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts, we are kicking off the weekend with a classic favorite: The pumpkin carving contest! 150 pumpkins will be available for your crafting pleasure and we are confident that this year’s artists will be even more spectacular, silly, and creative than last year’s brilliant contestants. You can pick up your pumpkin and carving tools at Guest Services starting on Thursday. We will be judging and presenting prizes to the winners the following Sunday, October 23rd and we can’t wait to see what you come up with!

If being elbow-deep in the glorious goo of a pumpkin isn’t quite your cup of tea, feel free to join us for any and all of our other MEA weekend activities. We will be offering a guided bike ride for kids on Friday morning and a fun geology activity on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. For those already bursting with some holiday spirit, we will also be hosting a Halloween Extravaganza Open House from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. both Friday and Saturday with seasonal craft supplies, a presentation by one of our Wolf Ridge naturalists, and (of course) a spot for those pumpkin carving antics we mentioned!

Evening is coming earlier and earlier up on the North Shore of Lake Superior, but you can keep the fun going at our nightly campfire. S’mores will be available at Guest Services, free to a good home and satisfied sweet tooth. On Friday night, you and the family are welcome to enjoy our special Movie Night (featuring the ghoulish and goofy Hotel Transylvania 2), beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Tofte Room.

You can find a full schedule of our fantastic activities on the Bluefin Bay calendar of events. From all of us at the Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts: Have silly, safe, and heartily enjoyable MEA weekend!
