Let’s Get Artsy: New Craft Mini-Courses at Bluefin Bay!

December 2, 2019

mini-market basket class at bluefin bayThe creative vibes are strong here on Minnesota’s North Shore. Because of this, there are incredible opportunities to immerse yourself into extensive courses like timber framing, wood carving, wooden boat building, basketry, blacksmithing, and cheesemaking at the North House Folk School. Or, enhance your inner artist with courses like printmaking, drawing, painting, pottery, writer’s workshops, and photography at the Grand Marais Art Colony.  Not to mention, talented artists with studios and galleries open to the public reside up and down the shore. If you are looking for some creative inspiration then this is the place to be!

Starting in late December, we are excited to bring North House Folk School inspired mini-courses onsite as part of our resort winter Activities program. The courses are completely free and will introduce guests to the element of Northern craft and add a new crafting dimension to our resort activities and events schedule.

Here are the 4 courses we will be offering in December and January:

Pin Loom Weaving:

Pin Looms are small and portable. While the weavings are small they can be turned into clothing, blankets, pillows, only needing imagination. Students will learn how to wind the yarn onto the loom and create some basic patterns. You will leave with woven squares that can be finished into a project of your choice.

This class will be taught by local weaver Julie Arthur. Julie operates a website and has been weaving all her life.

Mini Market-Basket Class:

Taught by Mary Jane Huggins of Tall Tale – a small local shop focused on knitting and weaving. Join us and learn the basics of weaving and leave with a finished basket that can be used for serving bread, holding mail, or keeping special treasures. Participants can choose from two different handle options and the finished basket size is about 3 ½ x 6” x 3-4” in height.

Canvas Stenciling

In this course, you will learn how to stencil designs onto canvas. Various stencils include feathers, leaf shapes, hearts, and letters to personalize a bag. The specific direction is given as to how to paint to stencil cleanly.

Linocut Printmaking

Linocut Printmaking is like woodcut prints but starting with an easier material – a soft rubber (that is actually made from natural materials!) and carves easier. Essentially you are making a large stamp that can be used over and over and even layered with other stamps. You will print on stationery, notecards, notebooks, and/or banners.

Alcohol Ink Painting Intro Class

Painting with alcohol inks is a very fun and easy way to experiment and play with vibrant colors on non-porous surfaces such as ceramic tiles and special papers using various tools. Alcohol inks are a highly pigmented and fast-drying medium that lends itself to unique, complex-looking patterns, abstracts, and landscapes in very little time. No artistic experience needed! All supplies are provided but please bring an apron or old shirt to protect your clothing.
