Plein Air Grand Marais is an outdoor painting festival that has been happening for 16 years! This year the event will be held September 6-13 and has been organized by the Outdoor Painters of Minnesota and the Cook County Historical Society’s Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery.
The annual Plein Air event brings outdoor painters of all ages and abilities to Minnesota’s North Shore. In addition to the competition of 75 juried painters, the event also includes workshops for kids and adults, demos, daily activities, mini-workshops, and public art activities.
In addition to all of the artsy fun happening in Grand Marais, we are excited to host a daily ‘Paint-Out’ and Artist Social here at Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts. On Saturday, September 7th artists will spread out around the resort properties during daylight hours to paint. The public is invited to stroll around and watch these talented artists paint along the beautiful Lake Superior shoreline.

Basically, it’s the act of being in nature with an awareness of the sights, sounds, and smells that are all around us in order to benefit our well-being. In other words, we allow ourselves the time to unplug, relax, and recharge in nature. Interested in learning more about this ancient practice? This article is a nice starting point.
