July 29, 2019

Join us for one of our favorite festivals in the Coolest Small Town in America!

Fisherman's Picnic in Grand MaraisThis coming weekend is the 90th Annual Fisherman’s Picnic in Grand Marais. The four-day festival begins Thursday, Aug. 1 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 4. A favorite of locals and tourists, this event is located in Grand Marais‘s Downtown Harbor Park and sponsored by the Grand Marais Lions Club.

This year, the Fisherman’s Picnic festival line up includes crazy days sales, a large craft show, daily contests and prizes, specials and events at local stores, live music in Harbor Park, food trucks, Bingo, blacksmithing demonstrations, cross-cut saw competitions, kids activities, rock skipping contests, a Fisherman’s Picnic 5 mile trail run or 5K walk on Saturday morning, a street dance and fireworks on Saturday night, a fish toss contest (you have to see it to believe it!), and a parade on Sunday afternoon.

The Fisherman’s Picnic truly is fun for the whole family and one that many of our Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts guests look forward to all year. The Lions Club hosts a BIG raffle, including a grand prize of $10,000! In addition, the club will be serving up their infamous Fish burgers. You have to try one!

Activities Spotlight: The Wild Side of the North Shore

July 8, 2019

We’re very fortunate to be located within the beautiful Superior National Forest along Minnesota’s North Shore. The United States Forest Service manages the wilderness area, using ecosystem management plus multiple uses solutions, for animals and plants to thrive along with human enjoyment and recreation. One of their ways to help educate and excite people about this incredible area is to offer weekly naturalist programs at different locations in Cook County. Forest Service naturalists stop by Bluefin Bay two nights a week during the summer for fun and informative talks. These resort programs are part of the countywide North Shore Resort Naturalist Program funded by the USDA Forest Service and Visit Cook County.  In addition to these programs, our friends at nearby Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center pay us a visit on Wednesdays and Fridays. They stop by to showcase a couple of their wild residents who came to them as part of a rehabilitation program.

Here’s a list of these complimentary nature and wildlife programs:

  • Wednesdays: Raptors! A Naturalist Program:  Join us for an evening with a Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center Naturalist to learn more about raptors! Raptors, or birds of prey, are found worldwide and have special adaptations to catch live animals for their diet.
  • Thursdays: North Shore Naturalist Program – A Superior North Shore:   Join a U.S. Forest Service naturalist for a fun and informative program by the campfire at the Bluefin Bay Beach. Lake Superior dominates the North Shore, but how well do we know our big lake?
  • Fridays:  Meet Hunter The Great Horned Owl: Our friends at Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center will be here on Fridays from 3-6pm at the Bluefin Bay Guest Services building. Come meet and learn about his beautiful  Great Horned Owl named Hunter.
  • Saturdays: North Shore Naturalist Program – Wildcats of the Woods: Join a U.S. Forest Service naturalist for a fun and informative program by the campfire at the Bluefin Bay Beach. Find out about the wild cousins of your house kitty who are prowling the Northwoods.
