Paddling Season is Almost Here!

KayakingReady to get out on the water? You’re in luck – Our complimentary guided kayak and canoe trips start June 1st! Gliding along the water in a canoe or kayak is an ideal way to de-stress and connect with the natural world around you. Our guided Wilderness Canoeing on the Poplar River, Lake Superior Kayaking Trips, and our NEW Inland Kayaking Trips on Caribou Lake are the perfect way to experience the magic of paddling. Our experienced guides will provide you with all the equipment and instruction needed for a memorable and safe adventure on the water.

NEW THIS YEAR! Inland Kayaking:  Join us for some inland kayaking on the beautiful Caribou Lake in Lutsen. We will kayak for two hours on this peaceful, scenic lake. As we paddle along the shore be sure to look for wildlife like beavers, loons, and ducks! Inland kayaking is perfect for families and beginners or for those who do not want to paddle on Lake Superior. This guided trip is kid-friendly for children ages 7 & up (accompanied by an adult). Basic stroke instruction will be provided.

Wilderness Canoeing: Our Wilderness Canoeing Experience on the Poplar River has become a guest and staff favorite. Along with your guide, we will shuttle you to the Poplar River in Lutsen, hike about a quarter of a mile to the canoes, and paddle two miles along the beautiful Poplar River. No past canoe experience is needed and children as young as five can participate. The trip is leisurely, scenic, and within the whole family’s capabilities.

Lake Superior Kayaking: Lake Superior offers one of the most incredible sea kayaking experiences available between the two coasts. Paddle along the scenic shoreline of Lake Superior with one of our expert kayak guides. You will spot a sea cave and multiple waterfalls, not to mention the wildlife! Lake Superior could be calm like glass or have choppy waves, we will go regardless, (as long as we deem the conditions safe) in order to provide guests with a full Lake Superior experience. Our expert and certified guides will provide you with full instruction and equipment you need. Kayakers of all skill levels age 12 and up are welcome.

Our canoe and kayak trips are quite popular and tend to fill quickly. To reserve your spot, be sure you sign up in advance – you can now sign up right from the activity calendar on the website! Just click on the activity and look for the sign-up link at the bottom of the description.

Happy paddling!

Biking at Temperance River State ParkAs a guest at Bluefin Bay or Surfside on Lake Superior, bike rentals for adults and kids are included as part of your stay. In addition, you can join in on a complimentary guided bike trip. Once again, we’ll be offering our popular Temperance River Bike & Hike.  For this trip, we start off biking a  2.1-mile section of the Gitchi-Gami trail through the northern boreal forest. Once at the Temperance River, we’ll trek along the river on a short hike with views of beautiful waterfalls. Finally, a relaxing bike ride takes us back to Bluefin Bay.  A mostly gentle down sloping path for an easy and rewarding way to finish the trip! This year, we’re adding another biking adventure to our activity schedule. The Onion River Bike & Hike will feature a 6-mile (12-mile roundtrip) ride along the paved Gitchi-Gami trail plus a short hike along the scenic Onion River.

Local Bike Races and Events

The Lutsen-Tofte and Grand Marais areas have become known as a haven for bikers and biking events. The Le Grand Du Nord Gravel Cycling Classic is coming up this weekend, May 25th. Starting out at the Grand Marais harbor this gravel course climbs almost 6000 ft! Live music, Voyageur Brewing Company beer and the vibe of Grand Marais make this a fun event for bikers and spectators.

On June 29, the Lutsen 99er returns. Several thousand bikers from around the country gather to race through the pristine north woods of Cook County. The race is most known for its 99-miles of mountainous course. But, it has now expanded to include a 69, 49, 25-mile course options, and Sunday kids races.

Mountain Biking

In addition to the Gitchi-Gami paved trail that runs right to the Bluefin Bay properties, this area has incredible mountain biking opportunities. For single-track enthusiasts, check out the Sugarbush Trail Association Trails located just a couple miles from the resort and the Pincushion Mountain Biking Trails in Grand Marais.

Happy pedalling!

Get Summer Ready at Waves of Superior Spa

May 6, 2019

Waves of Superior Spa Summer ProductsWe’re all ready for warm, sun-filled summer days. But, are your skin and nails ready for summer? If not, it’s time to visit Waves of Superior Spa. Plus, Mother’s Day is almost here! Treat Mom to a spa treatment, buy a gift card, or stop in to purchase an amazing Eminence Organics skin care product.

One of our favorite new spring products is the Lilikoi Mineral Defense Collection. These lotions and creams are designed to protect you from environmental stressors like the sun. In addition, they also protect your skin from blue light! Natural blue light comes from the sun but artificial blue light is from things like a computer, phone, and television screens. Additionally, this harmful form of blue light can contribute to hyperpigmentation, wrinkles and worsening skin elasticity. On the positive side, the Lilikoi Mineral Defense Collection helps protect your skin from these natural and artificial stressors.

  • The Light Defense Primer will protect your skin from the sun and blue light pollution, minimize imperfections and provides a lightweight base for makeup.
  • The Mineral Defense Moisturizer will leave your skin lightly hydrated, protect from the sun, and shields the skin from indoor and outdoor toxins.
  • The Mineral Defense Sport Sunscreen is water resistant and protects your skin from UV damage even when swimming.
