February is almost here and it’s the ideal month to celebrate our enthusiasm for winter adventures as well as cozy times spent with those we love. Here are a few reasons to plan a North Shore getaway in the coming month:
There are some languages that have words for which there is no single or defined translation. In Danish, hygge (pronounced “HUE-gah”) is one such word. It’s basically a word for enjoying life’s simple pleasures. During the winter, especially, we embrace the feeling of hygge as we seek cozy spaces and meaningful time spent with family and friends. Hygge promotes emotional wellbeing and gives us a sense of togetherness and contentment whether we are at home or out, doing something ordinary or extraordinary.
At Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts, we’ll help you get into a hygge state of mind. Imagine a day spent enjoying winter fun: carving out the fresh powder at Lutsen Mountains, gliding along freshly groomed cross-country ski trails, or exploring a local frozen river followed by a cozy dinner at the Bluefin Grille. Afterwards, curl up with a good book or jovial conversation with loved ones around a warm fire while listening to the waves of Lake Superior just outside your window.
Check out all the complimentary resort guided activities and entertainment available during your stay – We even have complimentary cross-country ski, snowshoes, and ice skate rentals. Indoors, you’ll enjoy upscale accommodations, fireplaces, and breathtaking views of Lake Superior. Everyone will be able to create their perfect recipe for hygge!
Here on Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior, we are so into the embracing of hygge that there’s even a festival to celebrate it! Check out some fun local events happening February 9-15 during the Hygge Festival.
The Lutsen-Tofte area is home to some of the most beautiful and dramatic sections of the Superior Hiking Trail and winter hiking adds a whole new level of fun and adventure. This season, our Activities Director has been busy adding new hikes and adventures to the weekly activities line-up. Get ready to be inspired to book your Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts winter getaway!
The Wilderness Bonfire Adventure Hike is a 1.5-mile trek roundtrip and we’ll stop to explore 3 points of interest:
Halfway on our trek, we stop at the campsite located on the East side of the Caribou River and enjoy a bonfire, complete with smores!
The Kids Adventure Club activities are weather permitting but include kid size hikes, animal track identification, winter hibernation and much more. On poor weather days, we’ll make a craft or play bingo!
The Kids Adventure Hike starts out with a brief description of animal hibernation in the north woods and animal track identification followed by a short loop hike in Lutsen where we’ll search for tracks and make a visit to the Poplar River Falls. Kids and adults are encouraged to attend. Everyone should be prepared to be outside for approximately 1 hour. Winter jackets, gloves, hats, face masks and winter boots will keep you warm and toasty.
Cook County, Minnesota has over 400 kilometers of ski trails making it home to North America’s largest ski system. We have 150 kilometers of trails in the immediate Lutsen-Tofte area making it a true cross-country skier paradise!
The Sugarbush Trail System connects directly to Bluefin Bay Resort providing access to 65 kilometers of groomed trails. From easy to expert, all levels of skiers will enjoy the experience while gliding through beautiful and remote forest service land in the Lutsen-Tofte area. Approximately ¾ of the ski trails are groomed for both classic and skate skiing. This handy guide on the Sugarbush Trail Association website details each trail section with distance, type of tracks and current conditions.
As a guest at Bluefin Bay, take advantage of our complimentary cross-country ski rental where you can check out skis, boots, and poles. During your stay, you can also sign-up for a Guided Cross-Country Ski trip with our Activities Staff. We’ll outfit you with skis, shuttle you to the ski trail access and lead you on a leisurely ski on the beautiful Onion River Road trail. This is a perfect activity for novice skiers and families. For the more experienced skiing enthusiasts stop by the recreation center for local trail maps, directions, trail advice, and take advantage of our waxing station.
For other cross-country ski trails in Cook County check out this list of trails on the Visit Cook County website. The North Shore Visitor website is another great resource for ski trails spanning the North Shore region from Two Harbors to Grand Portage. There are endless opportunities to explore this magical area on skis.
